VLANs Explained: A Beginner’s Guide

If multiple teams are sharing the same Office Network, they may not require access to the same resources. Different users, such as the finance team, may have different access needs as do the IT staff. VLANs or Virtual Local Area Networks are used to assist network administrators to group devices into virtual networks without having to create a physical network for each group of devices. Anyone interested in the basics of office networks and its management can gain knowledge of learning VLAN functionality through a CCNA Course in Chennai.

What a VLAN Means

A VLAN is a virtual LAN that is a grouping of devices on a switched network. Devices within the same VLAN can communicate at Layer 2, if certain conditions are met. Typically, devices on different VLANs must use a router or Layer 3 switch to communicate. For instance, an organization can setup employee computers in one VLAN and guest devices in another. VLAN configuration does not need to be configured to separate logical network traffic even if the devices are connected to the same physical switch.

The reasons behind why businesses use VLANs.

VLANs enable businesses to segment traffic based on departments, device types or access needs. Separate VLANs can be established for employees, voice phones, servers, and visitors. This simplifies the management of the network and may reduce the amount of unnecessary broadcast traffic in each VLAN. While VLAN separation can help implement security policies, it is no security solution in and of itself. There's still a need for proper routing rules and access control lists, among other protections, to manage communication between various segments of the network.

How VLANs are supported on switches.

The switches use the VLAN information to determine the logical network to which a frame belongs. Admins create VLANs and assign switch ports to them according to the network design. Normally, a port connected to a normal end device is configured as an access port for one VLAN assigned to the port. The beginners can get practice in creating VLANs on a managed switch or in a network simulator at FITA Academy. These exercises enable them to understand the impact of port assignments on connectivity and how wrong port settings can result in devices unable to communicate with one another.

Access Ports and Trunk Ports.

Access ports are generally used to connect end devices such as computers and printers to a particular VLAN. Traffic for several VLANs is switched across trunk ports between compatible network devices, like switches. The IEEE 802.1Q tagging is generally used in trunk links to specify which VLAN a frame belongs to. Similarly, the setting of native VLANs must be aligned with the network design in order avoid any unsuspected behaviour. When you're connecting switches between floors or departments in a bigger office, it's crucial to know the difference between access ports and trunk ports.

To plan VLANs for different teams, perform the following steps:

The first step to designing a good VLAN is to understand the organisation's network usage. For example, a company could have a VLAN for staff computers, a VLAN for IP phones, a VLAN for guest Wi-Fi and a VLAN for internal servers. The IT scenario can be used to learn about technical decisions that help meet business needs with students pursuing IT related courses in B School in Chennai. Administrators should also setup IP subnets for each VLAN, keep track of which VLAN is assigned to which IP subnet, and ensure that the design enables the required services to function while preventing all devices from having free access.

Routing Between VLANs

When devices are in different VLANs, they are unable to communicate directly via layer 2 switching alone. They need to communicate via Layer 3 routing, which can be done by a router or a Layer 3 switch. A typical solution is router-on-a-stick, which is a router that has subinterfaces and a trunk link attached to it, and then sends and receives traffic for multiple VLANS. Alternatively, set up switched virtual interfaces (SVIs) on a Layer 3 switch. Access controls can then be used to limit communication between the various VLANs, depending on the organisation's requirements.

Testing and Troubleshooting VLANs

Once VLANs are set up, network administrators must determine whether the devices are able to access the resources they are intended to access. They have the ability to view VLAN membership, port status, trunk configuration, IP addressing, and routing configurations. Cisco devices can be used to identify configuration problems using commands like: 'show vlan brief' and 'show interfaces trunk'. Check if a computer can't connect, if the switch port is in the correct VLAN and if the IP address is in the correct subnet. Solving these checks one by one develops good troubleshooting skills.

The knowledge of VLANs provides a solid foundation for configuring switches, understanding network segmentation, and troubleshooting connectivity issues for network administrators and professionals. Simulating networks and using real devices can help readers learn how to begin careers in network support and administration. Enrolling in a Training Institute in Chennai will make it easier for learners to start this process, and as they continue practicing in the lab, they will gain confidence to deal with more intricate network setups and security measures.
