I always assumed I was in zone 6, but a plant tag recently said otherwise, which sent me down a rabbit hole. I’d been choosing perennials based on that old number for years, and a few of them have struggled through winter.
I looked up my postal code with the growing zone finder on Gardenvoila and it showed a different zone than the one I’d been using. Apparently the maps get updated, and my area shifted. It changed which perennials I’m comfortable trying, though my sheltered south wall probably acts warmer than the rest of the yard anyway.
Has anyone else found their zone was outdated? And do you plant a bit outside your zone by using microclimates? I’m tempted to try a borderline hydrangea against that wall.
