Katong and Joo Chiat have more facial studios per square kilometre than almost anywhere else in the east, and most of them are small enough that you'll see the same face at the door every visit. Shophouse units, one or two treatment rooms, no queue system.
That's the appeal, and it's also the difficulty. When every studio looks similar from the outside, it's hard to work out which one suits what your skin actually needs. Here's a look at eight worth knowing, and what each one is best placed to handle.
Check hours and unit numbers before you go — small studios in this area move more often than you'd expect.
1. Zest Oasis — Parkway Parade Medical Centre, #05-20
Strictly speaking this is Marine Parade rather than Katong, but it's five minutes down the road and it's the option to know about if your concern goes beyond a standard facial.
Zest Oasis is a medispa, which means the equipment list does things a salon facial can't. Facial treatments run on HydraFacial Syndeo, which uses vortex suction to clear pores without manual extraction, and the Sciton BBL HERO broadband light platform for pigmentation, sun spots and visible redness. For skin laxity there's their CoolLift 360, combining focused ultrasound with radiofrequency.
The part that matters practically: every visit starts with an assessment, and the protocols are set by the founding doctors rather than left to whoever is on shift. If you've been having monthly facials for a year and your pigmentation hasn't shifted, this is where you'd go to find out why.
Good for: pigmentation, congestion, skin firmness, pre-event glow
Getting there: Marine Parade MRT (TE26), Exit 1
2. MEROSKIN — 201 Joo Chiat Road, #01-02
A boutique studio on Joo Chiat Road working with the BABOR product range. Facials here lean towards the relaxing end — proper face massage rather than a rushed routine — which makes it a good pick if you want your treatment to also function as an hour off.
Good for: hydrating and glow facials, treatment as downtime
3. NEAU — 313 Joo Chiat Road
A beauty and wellness spa further up Joo Chiat Road, offering facials alongside body treatments. Worth noting that their extraction work is thorough, so if you're congested, it's a fit — and if you're sensitive about extraction, say so upfront.
Good for: deep cleansing and extraction
4. Midori Med Spa — 140 Joo Chiat Road, #01-01
Slightly more technology-led than the neighbouring salons, with treatments including peel-based facials and radiofrequency body work. One of the better-reviewed studios in the immediate area.
Good for: peel facials, texture and glow
5. Soulbeaute — 96 Joo Chiat Road
A small boutique salon near the Joo Chiat and Dunman end, covering facials and hair removal. The kind of neighbourhood studio where regulars book the same beautician for years.
Good for: regular maintenance facials
6. Nour!sh Naturally — 66 East Coast Road, The Flow, #07-02
Sits at the natural and holistic end of the spectrum, combining facials with massage therapies. A reasonable choice if you prefer gentler products and a slower pace over active ingredients and devices.
Good for: sensitive skin, gentle facials, facial and massage combinations
7. De Beaute — 112 East Coast Road, #04-15
Inside i12 Katong, covering facials, body treatments and TCM-influenced services under one roof. Convenient if you're already at the mall and want to bundle a facial with something else.
Good for: facials plus body or TCM treatments
8. DermAlly Specialist Skin Clinic & Surgery — i12 Katong, #03-08
Doctor-led rather than a spa, so a sensible option when the issue is medical rather than cosmetic — persistent acne, a rash that won't settle, or a mole you want looked at. Not where you'd go for an hour of relaxation, and that's the point.
Good for: skin conditions needing a doctor
How to pick between them
Work backwards from what's bothering you.
Dull, dry, congested skin, and you want to feel looked after. Any of the boutique studios on this list will do the job. Pick on location, price and whether you like the beautician, because at this level those matter more than the product line.
A specific concern you've already tried to fix. Stubborn pigmentation, skin that's lost firmness, breakouts that keep returning in the same spot. This is where device-led treatment and a proper assessment earn their cost, and where a relaxing facial will keep feeling lovely without changing anything.
Something that might be medical. See a doctor. A facial won't fix it, and the wrong treatment on inflamed skin can set you back.
One last thing, whichever you choose: ask at the first visit what the plan is and how many sessions it's likely to take. Somewhere that gives you a straight answer, including "this probably needs a different approach", is worth going back to.
