It's currently Saturday morning in Kathmandu.
The bags are already packed, the battery is charged, and the plan is easy to follow: Leave the city, stick to the highway for some time, and then take the road less traveled.
Initially, pretty much every modern EV can accommodate the trip.
However, once the road goes off-road, becomes hilly and the smooth tarmac turns to gravel, priorities shift.
Then range isn't the only thing that counts.
The selection of the best electric vehicles in Nepal to do adventures, road trips, and rough terrain become interesting here.
Useful road trip EV should have enough range to last for the trip, but it should also have sensible ground clearance and appropriate tires with an ability to grip the road surface ahead.
If you're new to the EV buying process, the thing to keep in mind is that you don't have to purchase one vehicle that fits all your needs.
It's discovering the EV that is right for you.
What Makes an EV Good for Adventure?
Adventure driving in Nepal is not about extreme off-road driving. It can be a road trip to Pokhara, a gravel road, or a rural road to a homestay or a trip over a few days, and a road changes a number of times.
This means that a number of practical considerations come into play.
Ground clearance decreases the risk of underbody hitting potholes, raised road edges and uneven surfaces. In recent times, some EVs were spotted in Nepal's market with an at least 200 mm clearance which is vital for the local buyers.
Tyres and suspension are as important. If the tyres are lacking in grip or the suspension system isn't built for rough roads, the clearance won't be much assistance.
Charging and range are more significant on longer trips. Range is often stated to be impressive, but driving speed, number of occupants, weather conditions, hill climbing and road conditions, as well as heating and air conditioning use, will all influence the actual range.
Drivetrain and traction should also be considered. AWD can be beneficial in low-grip situations, and if the EV is rear-wheel-drive, it doesn't have to be viewed as a dealbreaker on normal roads or even lighter rough streets.
The EV Choices That Make Sense for Different Journeys
There is no one-size-fits-all adventure EV.
Some work best for a long trip along the highway, and others fit better in a trip that involves the thrill of the road itself.
iCAUR V23: When the Journey Is Part of the Point
Think about taking a road trip consisting of highway driving plus broken hill roads.
The iCAUR V23 starts to get interesting on such a trip.
The Nepal-spec V23 features a 59.93 kWh battery, a 100-kW permanent-magnet synchronous motor and a torque of 210 mm and 210 mm of ground clearance.
According to the iCAUR Nepal, the SUV has a claimed range of 401 km and a wheelbase of 2,735 mm.
Such numbers do not necessarily mean that it is an off-road vehicle. They do offer a nice mix of SUV size, underbody clearance and practicality.
Some helpful real-world context is also available. With four passengers and luggage, Nepal Drives recorded a V23 with 99% battery power at Kathmandu and ran to Pokhara covering 220 km.
The trip was not for the ideal highway conditions, as there were times when it rained and was slippery.
If you are a first-time EV owner and primarily looking for a vehicle for commuting to work during the week and exploring the surrounding area on the weekends, then it's worth considering.
JAECOO J6T
Now suppose that the road is not merely a way of getting where you are going, but the one thing that is the goal.
The ground clearance of the new JAECOO J6T is 225 mm, compared with 200 mm for its predecessor J6.
That extra clearance may come in handy on deeper potholes, rough tracks and uneven approaches.
It has been used independently on paved road, gravel, muddy track, slippery surface in Nepal too.
Mahindra BE 6: A Road-Trip Option with Useful Clearance
The BE 6 has 207 mm of space beneath for unladen weight, as well as rear-wheel drive and multiple drive modes, such as Range, Every day, Race and Snow. Mahindra offers a choice of 59 kWh and 79 kWh battery packs, depending on the model.
The BE 6 is a different beast with that mix. Unlike the traditional off-road mission, it's not designed around that concept, but it may come in handy when traveling long distances on roadways that are broken up or have varying conditions.
That type of distinction is important to buyers who spend the bulk of their time on paved roads, but who prefer to travel by car on other roads on weekends or during the day.
Leapmotor B10: More Focus on the Long Road
The Leapmotor B10 is a case in point of the value of having a bigger ground clearance, which should never be evaluated alone.
The 67.1 kWh trim features a 434 km WLTP range, 160 kW motor and rear-wheel drive and a ground clearance of 180 mm.
The B10 is more at home on the road than on rough terrain, compared to higher clearance options.
If you are thinking about long trips on the highway, with the occasional bad road, then another few centimetres of clearance might not be as important as its bigger battery and WLTP range.
BYD Atto 2: Everyday EV With Extra Underbody Space
The BYD Atto 2 is something else for a buyer who primarily considers his or her adventures to be an outing from the city to the outskirts.
Atto 2 Premium for Nepal market features a 51.13 kWh battery, 100 kW motor, 345 km of WLTP range and a ground clearance of 200 mm. It also offers 380 litres of boot space that can be extended to 1,320 litres when the rear seats are folded down.
That's not quite a rugged off-road vehicle, but more of a go-anywhere, do-anything compact SUV. However, 200 mm clearance may be helpful on roads plagued by potholes, steep ramps and rough stretches away from urban centers.
What Should a First-Time EV Buyer Check?
Imagine that Saturday trip again. Before choosing a vehicle, ask yourself five simple questions:
1. How much of my driving is actually rough-road driving?
If the answer is only occasional, you may not need the most rugged-looking EV.
2. How far do I normally travel in one day?
Look at claimed range, but also consider charging stops and real-world conditions.
3. What kind of roads do I use?
Ground clearance matters more on broken roads, while tyres and suspension become increasingly important as surfaces deteriorate.
4. Do I carry family, luggage or outdoor equipment?
Boot space, rear-seat comfort and vehicle dimensions matter on road trips.
5. Where will I charge and service the car?
For first-time EV ownership, charging and after-sales access deserve the same attention as battery capacity. This is particularly important before planning regular long-distance routes.
The Right EV Depends on the Adventure
By Sunday afternoon, the best EV is not necessarily the one with the biggest battery or the tallest ride height.
It is the one that still makes sense when the road changes.
The iCAUR V23 offers a combination of 210 mm clearance, a 59.93 kWh battery and a relatively compact SUV footprint.
The JAECOO J6T puts more emphasis on clearance and rough-road capability, while the Mahindra BE 6 and Leapmotor B10 take more road-focused approaches.
The BYD Atto 2 sits closer to the everyday compact-SUV end of the spectrum.
For first-time buyers, that is the important lesson: the top electric vehicles in Nepal for adventure, road trips and rough terrain are not one fixed list.
The right choice depends on where you drive, how far you travel and how often the road gets difficult.
